Germicidal

Germicidal lamps are designed to produce ultraviolet radiation in the shortest part of the light spectrum.  These lamps utlilize a quartz tube to contain a low pressure mercury arc that emits about 90 percent of its total rated energy at 253.7 nanometers. Ultraviolet radiation in this mid-200 nanometer range is highly effective at sterilizing microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, yeasts and molds.  The disinfection process functions by applying ultraviolet light to penetrate and  disrupt the organism's DNA structure at the cellular level leaving the organism alive but sterile. Germicidal lamps are found in food and beverage processing, medical and laboratory sterilization, high volume air handling systems, drinking water supply systems, ultrapure industrial water purification, landscaping ponds and wastewater treatment.  Germicidal action at the 253.7 nanometer wavelength can be supplemented with ozone production as well through the use of highly pure quartz tubing.  Given a more permeable quartz envelope ultraviolet energy at 185 nanometers directly contacts the ambient air around the lamp to produce ozone.  Ozone can be directed by both water and air flows into areas that cannot be reached by ultraviolet light alone.  Please contact your Kelsun sales representative should you require assistance in identifying the correct replacement lamp for your current installation or in acquiring components to produce a germicidal light system.
