Cold Cathodes

Cold cathode lamps are a long life alternative to standard fluorescent spiral lamps and a lower cost substitute for LED lighting.  The primary advantage of cold cathode lighting is the lack of "hot" coils in the lamp ends during the operating cycle.  This means that cold cathode lamps do not degrade as quickly as standard fluorescent tubes.  As an example an 8 watt spiral cold cathode lamp has a life expectancy of 25,000 hours while an 8 watt spiral "hot" cathode fluorescent tube has a life expectancy of about 12,000 hours.  Additional advantages of the cold cathode lamps are nearly full range dimming capability and an "instant on' starting function. The only constraint on cold cathode lamps is the wattage range generally reaches an upper boundary about 8 watts and is therefore limited to the replacement of 40 watts of incandescent or less.
