Can I change my lamp for a different type?
Lamps are often interchangeable within the same lamp family or fixture style i.e. a different wattage or beam spread in incandescent or a different color in compact spiral fluorescent. This is not always the case for linear fluorescent, metal halide and high pressure sodium lamps. All of these lamp types are arc source products which require a ballast for power correction. Each arc source lamp must have a ballast that matches the lamp both in wattage and in electrical characteristics. This means that a 70W high pressure sodium lamp is not interchangeable with a 70W metal halide lamp as the ballasts are entirely different even though they are rated at the same wattage. Fluorescent lamps have different requirements based on the length of the lamp, the tube diameter and the maximum rated wattage which dictate the type of ballast necessary. This means that a 24" 17W T8 bipin lamp cannot operate on a ballast rated for a 24" 20W T12 bipin lamp even though the overall fixture size is equivalent and the lamps are physically interchangeable. As mentioned earlier, incandescent and compact spiral fluorescent lamps are often interchangeable but these options are limited by the wattage rating of the fixture. Every fixture has a small white sticker placed inside the fixture housing which states the maximum wattage for which the fixture is rated. This limit will dictate what lamp options can be utilized in the fixture. Please inquire about options if you want to change your lamp and provide as much information as possible about your current lamp and fixture. We will be pleased to provide as many choices as possible to enhance your lighting usage.
