What is available in LED retrofit lamps and LED fixtures?
LED or light emitting diodes are logically the next significant advance in lighting applications. The advantages of LED lighting products include low power consumption, high illumination values and long service life. Although LED has been present in the marketplace for several decades its role has been limited to indicator lighting due to low lumen per watt ratio. This ratio is the comparison between power consumption (in watts) with light production (in lumens) for a given light source. As this ratio now nears 100 lumens per watt for some LED sources the use of LED lighting becomes practical for a broader range of applications at a reasonable cost for the energy saving benefits. There are many LED replacement lamps and fixtures entering the marketplace very rapidly but there currently are no standards for LED quality or performance. This means that all participants in the LED market have no assurance of the integrity of their purchase. Our approach to this issue is to only offer LED replacement lighting and fixtures from trusted vendors with long experience in the lighting market who are willing to assemble the highest quality parts and provide a viable warranty.
While LED options in lighting replacement are growing quickly this does not mean that an LED product can be placed in all applications. The basic components of an LED system include a solid state circuit with an optical coating, a power supply and some form of heat diffuser. All three of these components are required to produce a functional LED product. This creates real limits for LED lighting in terms of wattage and beam spreads that can be manufactured with current technology. As the LED component technologies increase in sophistication the number of available LED products will expand accordingly. Please inquire about LED options if you do not see a product type that meets your needs as this part of the lighting world will change very quickly over the next few years.
